LIDO standard

LIDO_logo_main_240x153_bg-whiteThe use of LIDO in xDams started within a successful cooperations with the Pratt Institute. Now we deliver a beta version, combining the results of the laboratory activities with the experience gained over the years, since 2008, with the use of ICCD (Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione) italian standards, as part of xDams projects for the description and publication of archives of artistic, iconographic, cultural objects.

logo_xdamsThe ICCD data structures was rendered and semplified in the editing masks of xDams, in order to provide each users, even those with not so specific expertise and knowledge, of a means to describing their cultural collections. The ICCD standards for collecting information about art objects (OA) and photo material (F) were adapted to the user’s requirements, often by including specific fields if necessary. In any case, XML as data format, and EAD 2002 standard as Application Profile was implemented.

Here below some example of cultural OPAC, managed with xDams: Archivio storico LUCE, Archivio storico Intesa SanPaolo, Archivio storico Pirelli, Musei civici fiorenti, Birra Peroni, Fondazione CDEC (Centro di documentazione ebraica contemporanea).

While ICCD standards are known in the Italian context and it is conceived as analytical and strict grid for a collection management system, LIDO “is intended for delivering metadata, for use in a variety of online services, from an organization’s online collections database to portals of aggregated resources, as well as exposing, sharing and connecting data on the web”. (http://network.icom.museum/cidoc/working-groups/lido/what-is-lido/).

The new communication media bring the museum organizations out of their physical context, and the use of standard methods for data exchange allow to create an information network unimaginable until now.

In this framework, gathering and delivering information in a virtual environment about the museum objects, as physical product and final result of all events connected to them (design, creation, realization, exposition, use, moving), can help increase the user’s interest, and ensure the survival and sustainability of the museum itself.

LIDO is perfectly integrated with the CIDOC-CRM conceptual reference model, providing definitions and a formal structure for describing the implicit and explicit concepts and relationships used in cultural heritage documentation. xDams allows collecting data in XML format, so they are naturally ready for exposing data in various ways. In particular, the xDams data can be treated and published as Linked Open Data. Thanks to semantic searches (SPARQL queries), computers can read these datasets automatically, and each data, or web resource, can be shared and interlinked with other, belonging to the same environment of production, or to other external datasets.

Here a detailed list of the LIDO Application Profile within xDams:
